St Lawrence County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Are Rats Able to Climb?
Most are quite familiar with how much trouble rats and cause. These animals are able to work themselves through a number of traps and obstacles you may set in their way in their efforts to get inside your house. They can dig their way through walls, bite their way through wiring, and slither their way through the smallest gap. They truly are some pretty amazing animals when you get down to it. You may have set some rather ingenious obstacles believing that they will be the solution to your rat problem. After all, putting up something like a fence or other type of tall barrier will be able to keep the rats out. Then you start to wonder, are rats able to climb? Sorry to Tell You, But… While you may not want to hear this, the reality is that rats actually are quite adept at climbing. They are not nearly as prolific as squirrels, but have the ability to grip on trees, boards, and material. Many have reported sitting in their living room one evening, then noticing something odd moving up their curtains. When they took a closer look, they notice that a rat was climbing its way up the material to the top of the curtain rod. They were stunned to see this happen, but learned a valuable lesson about how capable these animals are of defeating most obstacles. Their ability to climb doesn't end at fabric. Rats can climb a brick. They have the ability to maneuver their way up pipes, wood, and many other types of similar substances. Often the reason they are able to climb so adeptly is because the material they are climbing on has groups or scars in it that make it easy for the rats to grip. Keeping Them Out Like squirrels, rats have special grip pads on the bottom of their feet that enable them to hold onto surfaces. The smoother the surface, the more difficult it is for the rat. This is why if you are choosing to put up a fence or other similar structure to keep them out, you must use materials that would not enable them to be able to grip. Some go as far as to add a jellylike substance to the obstacle, making it impenetrable to the rat. Much in the same way that you would have difficulty trying to climb a pipe that was lubricated with oil, the rat would find it impossible to work its way up your metal fence with some type of jelly on the exterior. Plus, if you use the right type of jelly, it will have the same effect for virtually any other kind of animal. One note of caution, however. These jellies will not work on substances like water brick. The grooves and scars are still in place, limiting the effectiveness to the point where it may not work at all. You may have to look for other solutions should you be using these types of barriers.
